A pulse.
Weak.
Uneven.
But there.
“She’s alive,” I said.
The dispatcher answered immediately. “Sir, paramedics are less than four minutes away.”
Four minutes.
I had spent fifteen years learning how much could happen in four minutes.
“Stay with me, Violet.”
Her eyelids fluttered.
“Dad?”
The word barely existed.
“I’m here, baby.”
Her fingers moved against the hardwood.
Then she whispered something I couldn’t understand.
“What?”
Her lips moved again.
“Don’t… trust…”
Her eyes closed.
“Violet?”
Nothing.
“VIOLET!”
The dispatcher told me she was still breathing and warned me not to move her unless absolutely necessary.
Sirens finally cut through the neighborhood.
Paramedics came through the open front door with two police officers behind them. I moved aside because I had to, watching strangers kneel where I had been kneeling.
One officer introduced himself as Detective Aaron Mills.
He scanned the hallway.
“Anything stolen?”
“I haven’t checked.”
“Signs of forced entry?”
“No.”
His eyes moved toward the alarm panel.
I watched him notice the green light.
Then look away.
Twenty minutes later, Violet was being rushed to St. Joseph Medical Center.
I wanted to ride with her.
Mills stopped me.
“Mr. Cross, we need sixty seconds.”
“You have thirty.”
He glanced around.
“Initial appearance suggests an interrupted burglary.”
“No.”
“Excuse me?”
“This wasn’t a burglary.”
“We need to investigate before—”
“Then investigate.”
I pointed toward the living room.
“Television. Laptop. Wallet on the counter. Violet’s tablet. None touched.”
Then the front door.
“No forced entry.”
Then the keypad.
“Alarm wasn’t damaged.”
Mills frowned.
“That doesn’t necessarily mean—”
“It means someone knew the code.”
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
Enough.
“Who knows it?”
“Me. Violet. My ex-wife Harper.”
I paused.
“And?”
I hated the next answer.
“Harper’s fiancé.”
“Name?”
“Daniel Mercer.”
Mills wrote it down.
My phone rang.
Harper.
I answered.
Her scream nearly broke me.
“Where is she?”
“Ambulance is taking her to St. Joseph.”
“What happened?”
“She was attacked.”
Silence.
Then Harper began sobbing.
“I’m coming.”
“Where are you?”
“At work.”
“Where’s Daniel?”
Another pause.
“I don’t know.”
Detective Mills looked up.
I ended the call.
At the hospital, doctors took Violet through double doors and left me standing beneath fluorescent lights with blood drying on my hands.
Harper arrived eighteen minutes later.
She ran toward me.
“Where is she?”
“Imaging.”
She grabbed my shirt.
“Who did this?”
“I don’t know.”
That was when Daniel appeared.
He walked around the corner carrying two coffees.
My entire body went still.
“Ethan.”
He set the drinks down.
“I came as soon as Harper called.”
I looked at his shoes.
Clean.
His hands.
Clean.
His face.
Too composed.
Then I asked, “Where were you at 3:30?”
Harper stared at me.
“Ethan.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“Where were you?”
“At the gym.”
“Which gym?”
“Westside Fitness.”
“What time did you leave?”
His eyes hardened.
“Are you interrogating me?”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“The police will.”
Harper pushed between us.
“Stop it! Violet is in surgery and you two are doing this?”
Daniel lifted both hands.
“He’s upset.”
Then he said the sentence that made every instinct in me wake up.
“I understand. If I’d found Violet beside that backpack, I’d be losing it too.”
I stared at him.
Harper stared at him.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?”
I spoke slowly.
“I never told you where I found her.”
Silence.
He blinked.
“Harper must have.”
“No,” Harper whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“You said she was in the hallway.”
“I said Ethan found her unconscious.”
Detective Mills stepped from behind us.
He had heard everything.
“Mr. Mercer?”
Daniel turned.
Mills displayed his badge.
“I’d like to ask you a few questions.”
Daniel laughed nervously.
“Sure.”
“Where were you between three and four this afternoon?”
“I already told Ethan. Gym.”
“Can anyone verify that?”
“My membership scan.”
Mills nodded.
“Excellent.”
Daniel smiled.
Too quickly.
Then Mills asked, “Do you know the alarm code at the Cross residence?”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“No.”
Harper looked at him.
“Yes, you do.”
He turned sharply.
“What?”
“I gave it to you in February. When Violet forgot her science project.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I forgot.”
“You used it.”
“I said I forgot it.”
Mills wrote something down.
Then a nurse appeared.
“Family of Violet Cross?”
Everything else vanished.
Harper and I rushed forward.
The doctor told us Violet had a concussion, facial injuries, and significant blood loss from a scalp wound.
But she was alive.
Stable.
No catastrophic brain injury.
I closed my eyes.
For five seconds, I was not a soldier.
I was just a father being handed his child back by inches.
When we were finally allowed into her room, Violet looked impossibly small beneath the blankets.
Harper sat on one side.
I took the other.
Daniel remained outside with Mills.
Violet woke around 8:40.
Her eyes found me.
“Dad?”
“I’m here.”
She began crying.
“I tried.”
My throat closed.
“Tried what?”
“To stop them.”
Harper leaned forward.
“Them?”
Violet nodded.
“Two boys.”
“Did you know them?”
Her breathing quickened.
I squeezed her hand.
“You’re safe.”
She looked toward the door.
“Is Daniel here?”
Harper froze.
“Yes.”
Violet’s monitor began beeping faster.
“No.”
“Sweetheart?”
“Don’t let him in.”
Harper went pale.
“Why?”
Violet started shaking.
“He gave them the code.”
The room became silent.
I leaned closer.
“How do you know?”
Violet swallowed painfully.
“I heard them.”
She closed her eyes.
“They said Daniel told them Dad wouldn’t be home until Friday.”
Harper covered her mouth.
Violet continued.
“They were looking for something.”
“What?”
“Your black case.”
I stopped breathing.
For years, I had kept a locked black document case in my home office.
It contained deployment records, financial documents, passports, and something far more dangerous to anyone desperate enough to steal it:
Evidence.
Three months earlier, Daniel had asked me about an investigation connected to a private security contractor I had worked with overseas.
I had refused to discuss it.
The contractor was under federal investigation for falsified invoices and stolen equipment.
And Daniel had recently started working for one of its subcontractors.
I stood.
Harper looked at me.
“Ethan?”
I walked into the hallway.
Daniel was gone.
Detective Mills was on his radio.
“Where is he?”
Mills turned.
“He said he needed the restroom.”
“How long?”
“Maybe two minutes.”
My phone buzzed.
Home security notification.
FRONT DOOR OPENED — 8:47 P.M.
I showed Mills.
His face hardened.
Daniel had left the hospital.
And he had gone back to my house.
Police units were dispatched immediately.
I stayed at the hospital.
Every instinct screamed at me to go after him.
But Violet needed a father more than I needed revenge.
At 9:16, Mills received a call.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Officers found Mercer inside your home office.”
Harper gasped.
“With the black case?”
Mills nodded.
“But that’s not all.”
He turned his phone toward me.
A photograph from the scene showed Daniel handcuffed beside my desk.
The black case sat open.
Next to it was a second bag.
Inside were gloves.
Cash.
Two prepaid phones.
And Violet’s missing birthday necklace.
Harper whispered, “Oh my God.”
Mills continued.
“One phone contains messages between Mercer and the two suspects.”
My hands curled.
“What messages?”
Mills hesitated.
“Instructions.”
He read one.
“Girl gets home at 3:15. Alarm code 0612. Search office. Scare her if necessary.”
Harper broke down.
But Mills wasn’t finished.
“There’s another message.”
He looked directly at me.
“Sent after the attack.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does it say?”
Mills turned the screen.
Daniel had written:
YOU IDIOTS. I SAID SCARE HER. NOW HER FATHER IS HOME EARLY. GET OUT OF TOWN.
For fifteen years, people had told me the most dangerous moment was when a man lost control.
They were wrong.
The most dangerous moment was when he found it again.
I looked through the glass at Violet.
Then back at Mills.
“I want every message preserved.”
“It will be.”
“Every camera.”
“Yes.”
“Every person involved prosecuted.”
Mills nodded.
“That’s the plan.”
I looked at Harper.
“This doesn’t end with Daniel.”
She wiped her face.
“What do you mean?”
I remembered the black case.
The contractor.
The stolen equipment.
The investigation Daniel had been strangely interested in.
“He didn’t send those boys into my house for money.”
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Detective Mills gestured for me to answer on speaker.
I did.
A distorted male voice said five words:
“Cross, you should’ve stayed deployed.”
Then the line went dead.
Mills stared at the phone.
Harper stopped crying.
And suddenly I understood.
Daniel wasn’t the man at the top.
He was the man they were willing to sacrifice.
Someone else had known exactly when I was supposed to return.
Someone else wanted that case.
And whoever had nearly destroyed my daughter had just made one enormous mistake.
They had left her alive.
And Violet had heard a name.
A name she hadn’t told the police yet.
